Not sure what type of reed you need? Here's a quick guide to help
CLARINET
The standard Clarinet used in most playing and teaching is called the
Bb
Clarinet (B Flat) measuring about 50cm in height when put together.
When very young and to small to hold a standard clarinet a student may learn
on a C Clarinet, of which there are two types commonly in use:
Amati C Clarinet measuring about 40cm in height when put together.
This clarinet has a plastic body and metal keys. If playing this clarinet
then buy Bb
Clarinet reeds.
Lyons C Clarinet or Clareneo measuring about 40cm in length
when put together. This clarinet has a plastic body and keys. If playing this
clarinet then buy the Rico Royal or Vandoren Eb
Clarinet reeds.
SAXOPHONE
The standard Saxophone used in most playing and teaching is called the Alto
Saxophone (Eb alto) measuring about 50cm in length when put together.
REEDS
When buying a reed you need to know the MAKE and STRENGTH. A teacher may ask
you to get some Rico one and a half reeds for your clarinet. This could also
be written as Rico 1.5. or Rico strength one and a half. Strength and size
mean the same thing.
You will find that most manufacturers make more than one type of reed for
the same instrument. If we use Vandoren saxophone reeds for an example, and
are asked to get some Vandoren 2 reeds for your saxophone, this would mean
choosing what is called Vandoren Traditional or Blue box, it is listed
with no other words after it. Vandoren
Bb Clarinet, Vandoren
Alto Saxophone. When people refer to Rico reeds, they mean the Rico
Red/Orange box variety. Rico
Bb Clarinet, Rico
Alto Sax. A very good alternative reed is made by Razzco in Australia
Razz Bb Clarinet, Razz
Alto Saxophone.
